The Bridging the North Sea project, approved under the Straits Committee's fourth call for projects, was officially launched on 10 May 2023 at the Castle-Museum of Boulogne-sur-Mer in the presence of the project partners, officials from the city of Boulogne-sur-Mer, and the Straits Committee.
Bridging the North Sea is a two-year project that is setting up an innovative transnational network of scientists, scholars, public authorities, commercial organizations, museums, curators and volunteers along the British, French, Dutch and Belgian coasts of the North Sea Basin. The network will produce archaeological research and interpretation plans for the North Sea basin in Roman times to raise awareness among modern coastal residents of their maritime heritage, the North Sea’s historic role in connecting our area, and how present challenges such as rising sea levels were dealt with in the past.
Present for the occasion in Boulogne and representing the Straits Executive Committee, Mme Mireille Hingrez-Céréda, Vice-President of the Pas-de-Calais Department, welcomed the work initiated. Stressing the need to disseminate it as widely as possible, Mme Hingrez-Cereda said:
"We share a common history, we have faced and still face today the same challenges. This project, which brings us together, will serve as a reminder of that".
